Learning Disability Testing

Learning disability testing evaluates difficulties in specific academic areas, including reading, math, and written expression. This may include conditions commonly referred to as dyslexia (reading), dysgraphia (writing), and dyscalculia (math).

Learning disabilities are different from ADHD, which primarily affects attention, concentration, organization, impulse control, and/or activity level. ADHD can affect school performance, and a person can have ADHD, a learning disability, or both. Testing can help determine the source of the academic difficulties.

CFPS can typically evaluate for ADHD through health insurance, depending on the individual’s benefits and coverage. However, insurance often does not cover academic or learning disability testing, so these evaluations may require out-of-pocket payment.

What We Assess:
Our evaluations focus on identifying strengths and weaknesses in key academic areas, including:

Reading: Accuracy, fluency, and comprehension
Writing: Spelling accuracy, written expression, and fluency
Mathematics: Quantitative reasoning, calculations, and fluency

We also assess general intelligence and various aspects of cognitive processing, such as:

Crystallized knowledge
Fluid reasoning
Processing speed
Short-term memory
Long-term retrieval

Tailored Evaluations
Each evaluation is personalized based on the specific referral question, whether it’s a parent, school, or client inquiry. We compare individual performance to standardized benchmarks for same-aged peers, ensuring accurate insights and provide tailored recommendations.

When to Consider an Evaluation
Individuals are often referred for a learning disability evaluation when they face challenges in learning and applying academic skills despite receiving targeted support. Common diagnoses include:

Dyslexia: Reading difficulties
Dyscalculia: Math-related challenges
Dysgraphia: Writing struggles

I’ve scheduled an appointment. Now what?

At the time of scheduling, we will send you a confirmation email with details about the appointment time, address, paperwork, and what to expect. This information may come from various sources, so please be sure to check your email in the days leading up to the appointment, including your junk or spam folder.

You will also receive a reminder email and text approximately one week and again two days prior to the appointment to confirm, cancel, or reschedule your appointment.

When will my report be ready?

Report completion timelines can vary. On average, most reports are completed within four weeks of the appointment. The report will outline the testing that was completed, any applicable diagnoses, and recommendations regarding next steps. Once the report is complete, our office will notify you by email.
